The American Cancer Society's Patient Resource Center at Rhode
Island Hospital is the first of its kind in Rhode Island. The hospital
has partnered with the American Cancer Society to provide patients and
families easy access to a wealth of information about cancer, treatment
options and resources. All information and services are available free
of charge.
The center is located on the second floor of the Comprehensive Cancer Center and is open Monday
through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
What's Available at the Patient Resource Center
Volunteers who have been trained
by the American Cancer Society staff the Patient Resource Center. These
volunteers are available to guide visitors in their search for resources
and information as well as answer questions about financial aid, support
groups, programs, and services. Perhaps most importantly, the volunteers
are here to listen.
Information about a variety of support
groups and programs including:

I Can Cope - An eight-week, four-week or one-day education
and support program for patients, families and friends

Look good. Feel better. - Education for women about using
cosmetics to cope with the physical changes that accompany cancer
treatments

Man to Man - A support group for men diagnosed with prostate
cancer

Reach to Recovery - A patient visitation program for breast
cancer patients, conducted by breast cancer survivors

Road to Recovery - Transportation to treatment appointments
for cancer patients

Camp Hope - A week-long summer camp for children with cancer
and their siblings
The Patient Resource Center offers access to
the Internet and the American Cancer Society's extensive database.
Internet accessibility allows visitors to search for information about
cancer on the World Wide Web. The American Cancer Society's database
includes a wide range of cancer-related topics and resources for
oncology patients and their families. Updated daily by physicians, the
database offers the most current and reliable information about cancer.
Numerous books, pamphlets, cassettes and
videos addressing various cancer-related subjects are also on
hand.
Cosmetic items such as wigs,
temporary prostheses and turbans are available to help patients cope
with the side effects of cancer treatments.
