Prior to his presidency at Rhode Island Hospital, Amaral was interim chief of surgery at Rhode Island Hospital, chairman of the department of surgery at Brown University School of Medicine, president of University Surgical Associates and executive chief of surgery at Lifespan affiliated hospitals. He is professor of surgery at Brown University and director of the division of minimally invasive surgery.
A Pawtucket, Rhode Island native born to Portuguese immigrants, Amaral graduated from Brown University's program in medicine in 1981. He completed all of his postgraduate training at Rhode Island Hospital and joined the staff in 1989.
