Surgical Treatment of Obesity
The Day of Surgery
When you enter the hospital, you will either come in the day of or the day before the procedure.
- Do not eat or drink after 8 p.m. on the day before surgery
- Do perform an enema on the night before surgery.
After you are admitted to the hospital you will:
- Have a thorough history and physical exam by a surgical resident
- Have blood drawn
- Have an intravenous started. (Sometimes an intravenous cannot be started because of the obesity or poor veins. In these cases, a special type of intravenous will be inserted into a vein in the neck or beneath the clavicle prior to surgery)
- Receive an antibiotic and blood thinner.
- Have your legs wrapped from the ankles to the thighs to prevent the development of clots
