Recovering from Surgery: Medication

Prior to discharge, we will tell you what medications you should continue to take. Since it is not unusual to no longer need high blood pressure or diabetes medications after discharge, it is important to check with us prior to going home.

If you have any pain or discomfort take either Tylenol with codeine or plain Tylenol. You can take up to two Tylenol with codeine every four hours. Do not swallow pills whole. They should be chewed or crushed prior to swallowing.

If you have any heartburn or bile taste:

  • Elevate the head of your bed 3-4 inches
  • Don't wear any constrictive clothing
  • Try Maalox or Mylanta as directed

After surgery you should take:

  • A daily multivitamin with iron
  • A 1 mg folic acid tablet
  • 100 ug. Vitamin B12 tablet
  • At least 500 mg of calcium (This can be obtained from any over-the-counter calcium supplement)

This is something you need to do for the rest of your life or until we tell you differently. If you don't take these vitamins and minerals, deficiencies, anemia and bone problems may result.
