Who Qualifies for Surgery?
Candidates for surgery must weigh more than 100 pounds above their ideal body weight or twice their ideal weight. Ideal body weights are calculated on the basis of height. The standards we use are based on the Metropolitan Life Insurance studies.

As you can see, if you are 5'3" and a women, your ideal body weight is 130 pounds. Therefore, you must weigh more than 230 pounds to qualify for the procedure.
Special consideration is given to patients who have obesity-related illnesses, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and respiratory problems, if they do not qualify of the basis of their weight.
Other qualifications:
Individuals must also have made multiple past attempts at dieting and weight loss managed by trained individuals. These frequently include: Weight Watchers, diet clinics, very low calorie diet behavior modification treatments (Optifast), hypnosis, NutraSystem, dieting pills, jaw wiring, etc. Any of these would be considered significant attempts at losing weight.
- Patients must have no history of ulcers or at least no history of active ulcers.
- There must be no evidence of severe liver disease or hormone problems that caused the obesity.
- They cannot be abusing alcohol and drugs and must stop smoking prior to the operation.
- Patients must be between the ages of 18-55.
