Lifespan provides malpractice/professional liability coverage for all employees and eligible affiliated physicians through Lifespan Risk Services, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lifespan Corporation, and RISE (R.I. Sound Enterprises Insurance Co., Ltd.).

The Lifespan Corporate Risk Management Department coordinates system-wide identification and management of actual or potential liability events. We are committed to providing opportunities for collaborative efforts to reduce liability exposures and improve patient care. To further this goal we developed the Risk Management Grant Program to provide a resource to stimulate innovative loss prevention projects that can be shared system-wide.  

The Lifespan Risk Management Grant Program provides, through a number of grant awards, a source of funding for projects relating to the following:

• Professional liability (malpractice): Liability incurred as a result of errors in performing professional services.  

• General liability:  Liability related to premises, operations and products.

• Patient safety efforts: Liability related to processes and/or systems that impact the way we care for our patients.

Funds that are awarded are not intended to cover ongoing operational expenses or to fund permanent positions.  

An advisory committee of risk management and claims professionals evaluates preliminary applications and recommends which should receive an invitation to submit a full proposal. Another group, the Risk Management Grant Advisory Committee, which includes Lifespan senior management and physicians, evaluates the full submissions. Once awards are made, brief status reports are required throughout the year.
