Butting Out:
What about Zyban?
Many
smokers try everything from hypnosis to old-fashioned willpower
and still can't give up the habit. They, and their loved ones, will
be heartened by news of a medication that makes it easier for some
smokers to quit.
Zyban is an antidepressant that acts like nicotine in the brain by
boosting levels of chemicals that increase energy and enhance mood.
Raymond Niaura, PhD, senior research psychologist at The Miriam
Hospital, says, "Zyban is at least as effective as the nicotine
patch, if not more so." Zyban is available only by prescription.
