Eastern Equine Encephalitis
Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus is transmitted by infected
mosquitoes. Last year, 4 cases of EEE were reported in Rhode Island; 2 were fatalities. In addition to
humans, EEE can affect horses, some birds, and house pets and other
domestic animals.
Symptoms
It takes from 4-10 days for an individual to develop symptoms of EEE.
These symptoms begin with a sudden onset of fever, general muscle pains
and a headache of increasing severity. Many individuals will progress to
more severe symptoms such as seizures and coma. Approximately one-third of
all people with EEE will die from the disease. Many who recover suffer
permanent brain damage, and require permanent institutional care.
If you have any symptoms and think
you might have EEE, contact your doctor immediately.
