The Literature and Medicine program uses works of literature as the basis for discussions on topics such as aging, death and dying, spirituality and health, medical error, the role of the healer, the medical industry, and other issues of concern to health care workers.

Alongside their peers but outside the demands of the workplace, health care professionals from diverse disciplines come together to reflect upon the work they do and their roles in society. Physicians, nurses, allied health providers, trustees and administrative and support staff come away with new insights into their work and their relationship to it.

Works of fiction, poetry, drama and nonfiction have been selected for their ability to help participants explore the intricate nature of the relationships health care professionals have with their patients and each other. With the help of an experienced facilitator, participants have the opportunity to discuss and reflect upon issues raised by the readings that are central to the human aspect of their work.

Previous readings have included Susan Mates' The Good Doctor, Charlotte Perkins Gilman's The Yellow Wallpaper, Eric Schlosser's Fast Food Nation, Courtney Davis' Between the Heartbeats: Poetry and Prose by Nurses and Mark Patinkin's Up and Running.

Lifespan is pleased to participate in the Rhode Island pilot of this powerful and innovative program, which has received national recognition. The Rhode Island Council for the Humanities originally sponsored the Literature in Medicine program.
