Hasbro Children's Hospital
Asthma Parent Support Groups
For
parents who have participated in an asthma education workshop, support
groups provide an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of asthma
and support each other in taking action to control asthma. Currently,
Hasbro Children's Hospital staff members facilitate two asthma parent
support groups, the African-American asthma support group and the
Hispanic asthma support group. These groups were created to meet
the unique cultural and linguistic needs of families in Providence.
A guest speaker is invited to each support group to lead
the discussion on a particular topic related to managing asthma.
Previous topics have included:
- Strategies for helping children develop self-management skills
- Asthma medications and potential side effects
- Reducing exposure to asthma triggers in the home
- How to work with your child's school nurse
- Herbal and other traditional remedies for asthma
Discussions conclude with a question and answer session, and each
group includes time for participants to share success stories and
seek advice from other parents. These support groups meet every
other month.
