"The best part of camp was that I got to meet a lot
of people with the same problem I have. It really helped me
understand my asthma and how to control it."
-Camper
"I was most impressed upon arrival with the organization
of the check-in. It was efficient, speedy, yet at the same
time each station took as much time as needed to ask the parent
and children about important factors."
-Parent
"He learned what the triggers are and also how to personalize
them."
-Parent
"(My child learned) how to take care of her asthma,
asthma triggers, and signs of coming asthma attacks "

Community Asthma Programs of Hasbro Children's Hospital directs
Rhode Island's only weeklong, overnight camp designed specifically
for children with asthma. The annual summer camp gives children
the opportunity to control their asthma through education in a positive,
healthy, safe and challenging atmosphere.
The camp is open to boys and girls with asthma who are between
9 and 13 years old, and is held at the Canonicus Camp and Conference
Center in Exeter, Rhode Island.
The camp is designed to provide an opportunity for children with
asthma to share ideas, problems, and concerns about asthma. It also
provides an opportunity for them to learn self-reliance and self-confidence
outside the home. It provides a positive camp experience for children
with asthma.
- Counselors with proven leadership skills are assigned to camper
groups of six children each.
- A special clinic provides 24-hour medical care and treatment,
which allows campers to participate in all activities to their
fullest capabilities. Trained medical staff members remain on
site throughout the week.
- Campers learn about asthma and asthma management through fun,
interactive educational activities such as "Asthma Family
Feud" and "Asthma Trigger Treasure Hunt". Other
camp activities include swimming, soccer, arts and crafts, sing-a-longs,
and canoeing.
The camp was founded in 1998 and is funded by private donors, corporate
sponsorship, local community groups and Hasbro Children's Hospital.
The camp is open to all children in Rhode Island regardless of ability
to pay.
