The Impact of the Partnership
Between 2000 and 2002, 852 children with asthma and their families
participated in the Providence School Asthma Partnership. Results
show:
- Decreased school days missed due to asthma:
661 fewer days in year since class
- Pre-class baseline: 4.08 days missed per child in the past
year; 54% reported any missed days
- 12-month follow-up: 1.27 days missed per child; 27% reported
any missed days
- Decreased emergency room visits for asthma:
247 fewer emergency room visits in the year since the class
- Pre-class baseline: 1.28 visits per child in the past year;
39% reported any visits in the last year
- 12-month follow-up: .24 visits per child in the past year;
11% reported any visits in the last year
- Decreased hospital days due to asthma:
85 fewer days in year since class
- Pre-class baseline: .38 days per child in the past year;
15% reported any days in the last year.
- 12-month follow-up: .03 days per child in the past year;
1% reported any days in the last year

drawing from participants who attended class and who also responded
to 12-month follow-up. 12-month follow-up response rate was greater
than 60% but varied slightly by survey item. Sample group number
ranged from 235 to 239.
