Asthma Program Staff
Robert
Klein, MD, director, Asthma
and Allergy Center. In 2001, Klein moved to Rhode Island
to establish the Asthma and Allergy Center at Hasbro Children's
Hospital as a center of excellence in asthma treatment, research
and education. He is professor of pediatrics at Brown Medical
School. Klein' s research areas of interest include perception
of asthma symptoms and treatment guidelines, adherence to treatments
in chronic illness, pulmonary function tests in childhood asthma,
latex allergy, recurrent infections and cystic fibrosis. He
has written articles for such journals as Pediatrics,
the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics,
Pediatric Pulmonology, Journal of Allergy and Clinical
Immunology and others. He is a fellow of the American Academy
of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and a fellow of the American
Academy of Pediatrics. |
Elizabeth
McQuaid, PhD, director, CVS/pharmacy
Draw A Breath. McQuaid is a child psychologist with more
than ten years of experience conducting research and clinical
practice with families of children with asthma. She received
her BA degree from Yale University, and her PhD in clinical
psychology from the University of Denver. In addition to her
work with the CVS/pharmacy Draw A Breath program, she conducts
research on asthma management in the family, with an emphasis
on increasing medication adherence in children. She currently
holds grant funding from the National Institutes of Health,
and recently received a Career Investigator Award from the American
Lung Association. |
Judith
DePue, EdD, MPH, director, Providence
School Asthma Partnership. DePue is a psychologist and researcher
at the Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine at The
Miriam Hospital and clinical assistant professor at Brown Medical
School. She has more than 20 years experience as a project manager
and investigator in community-based programs. DePue has been
involved with the Providence School Asthma Partnership project
since its inception, with responsibility for program evaluation.
As project director, she participates in the planning and oversight
of all project components. |
Catherine
Kempe, RRT, director, Asthma
Camp. Kempe, is a recognized pediatric respiratory specialist.
She has been engaged in community health education during the
past twenty years, specializing in asthma management and respiratory
rehabilitation programs since 1994. In addition to her role
with the Asthma Camp, she conducts asthma education workshops
in English at both the hospital and in the community. |
Arelis
Valerio, MD, community education coordinator. Before moving
to the United States, Valerio was a practicing physician in
the Dominican Republic. For the past four years, Valerio has
worked as part of the Asthma and Allergy Center team. Her responsibilities
include recruitment, program development and facilitating educational
workshops in Spanish. She also coordinates the Hispanic asthma
support group for parents of children with asthma. She is a
recognized leader among Providence's burgeoning Latino community
and serves on board of directors for the HELP Lead Safe Center
and Childhood Lead Action Project. Valerio has a son with asthma. |
Pastora
Medina, data assistant. Originally from the Dominican Republic
where she worked as a certified public accountant, Medina most
recently worked with the Providence School Department to help
Spanish-speaking families become more involved in their children's
education. Currently, she is responsible for implementing all
phases of data collection and follow-up for the Asthma and Allergy
Center. She enjoys her work because she is able to help families
and communities. Medina has two sons who have asthma. |
Lisa
LeTang, asthma advocate. Also a fitness instructor, LeTang
coordinates the African-American asthma support group for parents
of children with asthma. She also is responsible for participant
recruitment and follow-up. She has a son with asthma and enjoys
helping families become more confident in managing asthma. |
Christopher
Camillo, program coordinator, Community
Asthma Programs. Before joining the asthma programs team,
Camillo developed, implemented and oversaw an asthma education
and outreach program at the Providence Community Health Centers.
In addition to his responsibilities with Hasbro Children's Hospital,
he is the current chair of the Providence Pediatric Asthma Coalition.
