More Benefits of Tai Chi

The psychological effects of tai chi are becoming well-documented. A
relative of yoga, tai chi emphasizes inner awareness and deep breathing.
"When class is over, most students feels a sense of calmness,
relaxation and energy that lasts several days," says instructor and
former Newport Hospital nurse practitioner Robin Rodgers. "Tai chi is
a great way to reduce tension and insomnia and attain better
balance."
Tai chi classes begin with breathing exercises, followed by gentle
stretching. New movements are taught, old movements are reviewed. At the
end of the class, students weave the new and old movements into a
"form," which resembles a short, fluid dance. Some students feel
the benefits of tai chi as early as the first lesson, while others may not
notice a difference for the first few weeks.
DeBlasio advises students to practice daily. "It is like piling a
sheet of paper on top of another," he says. "In time, the pile
will grow higher and higher."
