Your Risk: Warm Water Exercise
Health care professionals agree that heat can be a good remedy
for aching muscles due to arthritis and other related illnesses.
If you are exercising in warm water, keep the following safety
tips in mind:
- When exercising in a heated pool the temperature should be
a minimum of 83° F (28° C) to a maximum of 88° F
(31° C).
- When soaking in a hot tub, the temperature can range from
98° F (37° C) to 104° F (40° C). The recommended
soaking time should not go beyond 10 to 15 minutes.
- If you are not used to a heated pool or spa, start out slowly
and fluctuate the temperature and the amount of time you spend
exercising until your body adjusts.
- If you start to feel dizzy or nauseous get out of the water
immediately.
- Pregnant women should talk with their doctor about the use
of hot tubs and water exercise.
- Children and the elderly are prone to heat exhaustion and
dehydration and should exercise with supervision.
