Genital Herpes
Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1)
and type 2 (HSV-2). Both men and women can be infected with genital
herpes. Most people who have genital herpes have few symptoms or
no symptoms at all.
Symptoms of Genital Herpes
Blisters on or around the genitals or rectum
Flu-like symptoms, including fever and swollen glands
Prevent Genital Herpes
- Abstain from sex or be in a monogamous relationship.
- Use latex condoms during sex to reduce the risk of transmission.
- Get tested for genital herpes and make sure your partner has
been tested.
- People with genital herpes should abstain from sex with uninfected
partners when their symptoms of herpes are present and when symptoms
are not present, as herpes can be transmitted even when no symptoms
are present.
Treatment for Genital Herpes
- There is no cure for genital herpes
- Antiviral medicines can reduce the length of outbreaks and prevent
outbreaks while taking the medicine.
- Daily suppressive therapy for those with symptoms can reduce
the risk of transmitting genital herpes to sex partners.
- Sex partners should also be tested and treated
