Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is a common infection of the female reproductive organs. PID occurs when bacteria enter a woman's reproductive organs from her vagina or cervix. PID often occurs as a complication associated with sexually transmitted diseases, especially Chlamydia and gonorrhea. The symptoms of PID are usually mild.

Symptoms of PID

  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Vaginal or cervical discharge
  • The presence of Chlamydia or gonorrhea
  • Fever
  • Pain during urination
  • Irregular menstrual periods
  • Pain during sex

Prevent PID

  • Abstain from sex or be in a monogamous relationship.
  • Use latex condoms during sex to reduce the risk of transmission.
  • Do not douche.
  • Do not use an intrauterine device (IUD) for birth control.

Treatment of PID

  • Can be cured with antibiotics
  • Finish all of the prescribed medicine, even if symptoms go away
