Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is a common infection of the
female reproductive organs. PID occurs when bacteria enter a woman's
reproductive organs from her vagina or cervix. PID often occurs
as a complication associated with sexually transmitted diseases,
especially Chlamydia and gonorrhea. The symptoms of PID are usually
mild.
Symptoms of PID
- Lower abdominal pain
- Vaginal or cervical discharge
- The presence of Chlamydia or gonorrhea
- Fever
- Pain during urination
- Irregular menstrual periods
- Pain during sex
Prevent PID
- Abstain from sex or be in a monogamous relationship.
- Use latex condoms during sex to reduce the risk of transmission.
- Do not douche.
- Do not use an intrauterine device (IUD) for birth control.
Treatment of PID
- Can be cured with antibiotics
- Finish all of the prescribed medicine, even if symptoms go away
