Trichomoniasis

Though symptoms are more common in women than men, trichomoniasis is a disease that affects both sexes. It is caused by the protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis.

Symptoms of Trichomoniasis in women:

Vaginal discharge with a strong odor
Pain during sex
Pain during urination
Vaginal itching
Lower abdominal pain

Symptoms of Trichomoniasis in men:

Irritation inside the penis
Discharge from the penis
Burning after urination or ejaculation

Prevent Trichomoniasis by:

Abstain from sex or be in a monogamous relationship
Use latex condoms during sex to reduce the risk of transmission
Get tested for trichomoniasis and make sure your partner has been tested.

Treatment for Trichomoniasis

Can usually be cured with the drug metronidazole
Trichomoniasis may recur after treatment
Sex partners should also be tested and treated
