Trichomoniasis
Though symptoms are more common in women than men, trichomoniasis
is a disease that affects both sexes. It is caused by the protozoan
parasite Trichomonas vaginalis.
Symptoms of Trichomoniasis in women:
- Vaginal discharge with a strong odor
- Pain during sex
- Pain during urination
- Vaginal itching
- Lower abdominal pain
Symptoms of Trichomoniasis in men:
- Irritation inside the penis
- Discharge from the penis
- Burning after urination or ejaculation
Prevent Trichomoniasis by:
- Abstain from sex or be in a monogamous relationship
- Use latex condoms during sex to reduce the risk of transmission
- Get tested for trichomoniasis and make sure your partner has
been tested.
Treatment for Trichomoniasis
- Can usually be cured with the drug metronidazole
- Trichomoniasis may recur after treatment
- Sex partners should also be tested and treated
