Trichomoniasis

Though symptoms are more common in women than men, trichomoniasis is a disease that affects both sexes. It is caused by the protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis.

Symptoms of Trichomoniasis in women:

  • Vaginal discharge with a strong odor
  • Pain during sex
  • Pain during urination
  • Vaginal itching
  • Lower abdominal pain

Symptoms of Trichomoniasis in men:

  • Irritation inside the penis
  • Discharge from the penis
  • Burning after urination or ejaculation

Prevent Trichomoniasis by:

  • Abstain from sex or be in a monogamous relationship
  • Use latex condoms during sex to reduce the risk of transmission
  • Get tested for trichomoniasis and make sure your partner has been tested.

Treatment for Trichomoniasis

  • Can usually be cured with the drug metronidazole
  • Trichomoniasis may recur after treatment
  • Sex partners should also be tested and treated
