Description
Adolescent substance abuse represents a serious public health problem. Among adolescents in substance abuse treatment, up to 67 percent report suicidal ideation and 30 percent suicidal behavior. Adolescents diagnosed with substance use disorders are three to thirteen times more likely to attempt and eventually complete suicide than those without this diagnosis. Despite the strong association between substance use disorders and suicidality among adolescents, integrated treatments that target these co-occurring problems in youth have not been tested. The primary purpose of this study is to develop and test a cognitive behavioral treatment protocol for adolescents with co-occurring substance use disorder and suicidality.
Significance
Our long term objective of this research is to yield a more effective and feasible outpatient treatment approach for adolescents with co-occurring substance abuse and suicidality.
