Description:
Pediatric asthma is increasingly common among minority children, and results in considerable health care disparity. This project has established a Community Partnership between Rhode Island Hospital and the Providence Community Health Centers to conduct a randomized, controlled trial to increase use of controller medications for asthma among Latino and African-American children. After a baseline assessment, all families will attend a group-based asthma educational session and are randomized to one of two nurse-delivered interventions, either: 1) A standard care asthma management condition (SC), or 2) A medication adherence intervention (MA), addressing cultural beliefs about medication and using electronic monitoring to facilitate medication adherence. All components are delivered in English and Spanish, according to family preference. Outcomes of medication use and asthma morbidity are followed for 12 months post-treatment.
Significance
This research attempts to increase preventive medication use in populations at risk for worse asthma outcomes. Such a result could decrease asthma symptoms and health care utilization for children with asthma.
