This is a pilot study.
Description
Serious emotional and behavioral disturbances in early childhood
are a growing concern. The purpose of this project is to examine
the nature and treatment of such disturbances in young children
(2-5 years old) admitted to the Pediatric Partial Hospital Program
at Bradley Hospital. Factors such as emotional competence (e.g.,
children's ability to express and manage positive and negative feelings)
and relationship functioning (e.g., quality of parent-child and
family interactions) may be associated with the development of significant
mental health problems in early childhood. As such, these factors
may also be important targets for clinical assessment and treatment.
In our research program, we aim to (1) better understand the emotional
and relationship functioning of young children presenting with serious
emotional and behavioral disturbances and (2) evaluate treatment
outcomes for young children receiving partial hospital treatment
for serious emotional and behavioral disturbances.
Significance
By conducting this research, we hope to gain a better understanding
of the nature and treatment of serious mental health problems in
young children. This line of research can help improve our approaches
to clinical assessment, intervention and prevention of emotional
and behavioral disorders in early childhood.
