HIV Prevention for Youth with Severe Mental Illness

Principal Investigator
Larry Brown, MD

Funding Source
National Institute of Mental Health

Description
This multi-site study will demonstrate the impact of a four-session family-based intervention to increase adolescent and parent communication and parental monitoring of adolescent activities. The family-based intervention will be compared to an intervention that targets only adolescents and a health promotion intervention that targets behaviors such as smoking, dietary habits and exercise.

It is anticipated that the family-based intervention will increase adolescents' safer sexual behaviors and improve communication and monitoring within the family. Collaborating sites are Emory University and the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Significance
This family-based HIV prevention research is one of the first to target adolescents with severe mental illness and their families.
