Sleep, Mood, and Postpartum Smoking Relapse

Principal Investigator

Description
While many women quit smoking during pregnancy, approximately half resume smoking within the first four months postpartum. One of the nearly universal challenges of the postpartum period is insufficient sleep. This study examines whether sleep and mood problems are triggers for smoking relapse during the postpartum period.

Significance
The relationship between sleep problems and postpartum smoking relapse has not been studied previously. A better understanding of factors that contribute to postpartum smoking relapse may help us to develop better interventions to decrease postpartum smoking, which in turn may help to decrease infant exposure to environmental tobacco smoke.
