Description:
Families are the primary providers of pediatric asthma care. Siblings are an important part of family life; however, their experiences of asthma have not been studied. Siblings are likely to affect and be affected by a brother or sister’s asthma care. This study aims to understand the effect of asthma on siblings and to explore how siblings are involved in asthma care. This study will examine how sibling asthma knowledge, sibling psychological adjustment, qualities of the sibling relationship (e.g., closeness, conflict), as well as cultural factors are associated with asthma management and morbidity.
Significance:
Pediatric asthma is the most common chronic illness of childhood and is increasing in prevalence, especially among minority children. This study will provide information regarding how all members of the family are involved and affected by a child’s asthma and will lead to the development of more integrated family-based interventions.
