Description
This longitudinal study follows children and families from the prenatal
period to 2½ years of age. The focus is on examining the
interplay of child temperament, sleep patterns, and parental appraisals
of their children in the formation of early relationships. About
half of the mothers participating in this study had a lifetime history
of major depression.
Significance
This line of research examines whether parents thoughts and feeling
about their young children affect their development, when other
major risks, such as maternal depression, difficult temperament,
poor family functioning, are simultaneously accounted for. Results
to date indicate that these parental characteristics indeed do affect
early relationship formation. The data may also prove useful in
understanding development of children at risk for depression.
