Description
The research project is an observational study of family communications
and rules about tobacco use. Data will be used to develop family-
based interventions for preventing child tobacco use, to improve
smoking cessation rates by parents, and to decrease environmental
tobacco smoke exposure of family members.
Significance
Tobacco smoke exposure, both active and passive, remains the leading
cause of preventable death within the United States. Furthermore,
tobacco use and in utero exposure is highly associated with many
mental health disorders. The work of this study builds upon growing
data supporting family interventions as important and effective
strategies for addressing tobacco use.
