Description
This is a randomized clinical trial comparing two strategies to
prevent smoking in 8- to 13-year-old children and their parents
who are patients at a hospital-based pediatric health care clinic.
The strategies being tested are:
- brief health care provider advice and pamphlets of anti-tobacco
use advice and
- addition of developmentally tailored, motivationally enhanced
counseling to the brief advice.
The sample is low-income and ethnically diverse. We are in the
last six months of collection of 24-month follow-up data.
Significance
Evidence-based strategies are needed for decreasing smoking uptake
by children and for promoting smoking cessation by parents. Pediatric
health care providers have unique opportunities to supplement community
and school-based tobacco control activities.
