Research Interests

Daphne Koinis Mitchell, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist with an interest in pediatric psychology. She has a particular interest in working with urban children with chronic illnesses and psychological concerns.

Her primary research interests are in the area of resilience and the identification of child-based, family/cultural, and neighborhood-related protective factors that may minimize children’s experience of asthma morbidity across the home and school settings

Selected Research Projects

Current collaborations:

Identifying Protective Factors in Urban Children with Asthma
The primary objectives of this project are to identify child-specific, cultural, and disease-specific protective processes that minimize asthma morbidity despite exposure to adversity in urban, low-income children from African-American, Hispanic, and non-Hispanic backgrounds. (Principal investigator: Daphne Koinis Mitchell, PhD)

Cumulative Risks and Asthma Morbidity in Urban Children
This project seeks to test a cumulative risk index, that includes asthma-related, cultural, and contextual risks that may be associated with asthma morbidity in urban children. (Principal investigator: Daphne Koinis Mitchell, PhD)

Community Partnership to Reduce Asthma Disparities
This project compares the efficacy of two different interventions for asthma management in Latino and African American families with children who have asthma. (Principal investigator: Elizabeth McQuaid, PhD)

Pediatric Asthma Disparities: Perceptions and Management
This project assesses disparities in pediatric asthma between three groups: Island Puerto Rican children, Mainland Latino children, and Mainland Anglo children. (Principal investigator: Gregory Fritz, MD)
