Drivers and Memory Problems

A research study of drivers with memory problems is being conducted at Rhode Island Hospital. Funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health, this study will examine changes in driving abilities and thinking skills in people with mild dementia who are actively driving.

Drivers enrolled in this study will be followed every six months over two to three years. An on-the-road test will be conducted by a professional driving instructor, and computerized and paper-and-pencil tests of visual skills, attention and executive functions will also be administered.

Participants must:

  • Be between 40 and 90 years of age
  • Speak English
  • Take at least one trip weekly as a driver
  • Have at least 10 years driving experience

Individuals must also have a family member or caregiver who spends time with the participant at least once a week and who has been a passenger, with the participant driving, at least once a month during the past year.

Participants will receive $100 every 6 months after they complete the office visit and the road test.
