National Lung Cancer Study
The department of diagnostic imaging at Rhode Island Hospital is
one of 30 sites nationally participating in landmark clinical trials
sponsored by the National Cancer Institute. Gerald Abbot, MD, director
of chest radiology at Rhode Island Hospital, is the principal investigator
for the Rhode Island trial.
- Are you eligible? This study is seeking people between
the ages of 55 and 74 who currently smoke or who are former smokers.
- Participants will receive free annual lung screenings
for a period of three years. These will be either chest x-rays
or spiral CT scans. Researchers at Rhode Island Hospital will
continue to monitor their health until 2009.
The goal of the study is to determine if early detection
of lung cancer with either spiral CT scans or chest x-rays actually
saves lives, and if so, whether the CT scans are better than x-rays
at reducing a person's chances of dying from lung cancer.
