Population-based Examinations To Determine Ankle-Brachial Index (PEDAL Study)

The Population-based Examinations To Determine Ankle-Brachial Index (PEDAL) Study is a cross sectional study that will evaluate characteristics of a screening population examined by ankle-brachial index measurement (ABI), to determine the incidence of Peripheral Arterial Disease (P.A.D.) in a screening population, especially in those otherwise at low- or intermediate-risk of cardiovascular disease. The purpose of this evaluation is to allow calculation of sample size estimates for a clinical trial to evaluate the role of routine ABI screening. A newly developed P.A.D. Risk Assessment tool designed to be used by individuals will also be evaluated.

Legs for Life® is a free public health screening program of peripheral vascular disease administered by the Society of Interventional Radiology Foundation. Screenings are done annually in the month of September at approximately 150 centers throughout the United States.  Each year over 13,000 individuals are screened. Legs for Life® is the most well-known and only ongoing free screening program for peripheral vascular disease. The ankle-brachial index (ABI) has been proposed as a method of identifying individuals at high-risk of adverse cardiovascular events.

The study population will consist of patients >18 years old who report for Legs for Life® ankle-brachial index screening at approximately 30 testing centers nationwide.
