    Frequently asked questions

    • How does it work?
The dermatologist smears a thin coat of colorless gel on the area to be treated, and then delivers short laser pulses using the EpiTouch laser. Each flash of laser light disables a large number of hair follicles in less than a second. Some patients report a small stinging sensation during treatment.
    • How many sessions are necessary?
To regularly produce a strand of hair, a hair follicle alternates between an active phase, when the hair is being produced, and resting phase, when the follicle is not active. Because the laser only affects actively growing follicles, only some of the hair is removed at each session. Patients usually have to return for additional sessions, to treat the remaining hair follicles as they become active. On average, 4 to 5 sessions are required, and the sessions are usually scheduled about one month apart.
    • How long does it take?
The amount of time the procedure takes depends on the size of the skin area being treated. In general, hair can be removed from the face and bikini area in less than 30 minutes. Larger areas, such as the legs or chest, may require more time.
    • What are its advantages?
Advantages of laser hair removal over waxing, shaving, plucking and electrolysis include:
      • Longer window of hair regrowth
      • Less pain and fewer visits than electrolysis
      • Less chance of allergic reaction
      • Less chance of ingrown hairs
      • No waxing is required before treatment
      • Hair does not need to be grown out before treatment
      • No anesthesia is required
    • Are there any side effects?
The most common side effect of laser treatment is redness or swelling of the skin for a few hours after treatment. The extent of this varies widely with patients and the area that is treated.
