Physician Licensing Requirements

Many states require CME credit for physician licensing. Licensing requirements vary widely from state to state. Following is an outline of local requirements and links to more information. Please check with the specific state for licensure/relicensure requirements.

Rhode Island

Every physician licensed to practice allopathic or osteopathic medicine in Rhode Island under the provisions of the Act and the regulations herein, shall on or before the first day of June of every even-numbered year after 2004, on a biennial basis, earn a minimum of forty (40) hours of AMA category 1/AOA category 1a continuing medical education credits and shall document this to the Board.

Said continuing medical education shall include a minimum of two (2) hours related to current information on any one or more of the following topics: universal precautions, infection control, modes of transmission, bioterrorism, OSHA, ethics, end-of-life education, palliative care, pain management, HIV testing regulations, and other regulatory requirements. 8/09

Massachusetts

During each two-year licensing cycle, physicians must earn a minimum of 100 credit hours, at least 40 of which must be in category I. The remainder may be in either category I or II. The 100-hour requirement must include 10 credit hours of risk management study, (Risk management study must include instruction in medical malpractice prevention, such as risk identification, patient safety and loss prevention, and may include instruction in any of the following areas: Medical ethics, Quality assurance, Medical-legal issues, Patient relations, Utilization review that directly relates to quality assurance, Non-economic aspects of practice management) at least four hours of which must be in category I activities. The 100 hours must also include two hours studying the Massachusetts Board of Regulation in Medicine's regulations.
