  • Lifespan Malpractice Plan (LMP)

  • Lifespan owns its own insurance company called RI Sound Enterprises (RISE). RISE provides professional liability (malpractice), and general liability to all the Lifespan affiliates, their employees, residents/fellows and eligible physician groups. This combined coverage is known as the Lifespan Malpractice Plan (LMP). The LMP is managed by Lifespan Risk Services (LRS), who is responsible for insurance operations, loss prevention, claims management and risk management education.

Physicians-in-training (residents/fellows), who are part of an approved residency/fellowship program at any of the Lifespan facilities are automatically provided insurance coverage for activities that relate to their formal training program, which would include approved affiliations. For insurance coverage relating to "Paid on Call" and "Moonlighting" activities, please refer to GME Policy - Institutional Policy for Moonlighting Activities.

Residents/Fellows who leave an approved Lifespan residency/fellowship program will continue to be covered for medical incident claims that are brought against them for activities resulting from their Lifespan hospital formal training program. There is no charge to the resident/fellow for this “tail coverage”. Residents/Fellows who leave the Lifespan system can contact LRS for additional information about their Lifespan malpractice insurance coverage and for coversheet and claim history requests. LRS Customer Services Personnel are available from M-F 8:30 AM to 5 PM at 401-444-8273 to answer any questions.
