Pharmacy Technician
Pharmacy Technicians assist pharmacists in the preparation of medications
and perform other various pharmacy-related duties. The information on
this page is specific to the Pharmacy Technician Training Program at Rhode
Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital. Pharmacy technicians' duties
may vary with the institutions that employ them.

Job responsibilities
- Assist in the formulation and preparation of medications.
- New medication orders pursuant to an order written by a physician
or other legitimate prescriber for review and dispensing by a pharmacist.
- Prepare intravenous mixtures and utilizing aseptic techniques in
a controlled environment according to the computer generated and/or
pharmacist approved formulation record, including proper labeling
and expiration dating.
- Prepare non-sterile pharmaceutical products according to the computer-generated
and/or pharmacist approved formulation record, including proper labeling
and expiration dating.
- Enter medication orders in the computerized pharmacy system including
appropriate production, formulation, dosage, frequency and duration
of therapy for reviews and approval by a pharmacist.
- Pick up medication orders and deliver medications to the patient
units and other areas of the hospital.
- Fill medication requisitions for departments and laboratories.
- Maintain floor stocked medications.
Educational requirements:
- High school diploma with strong math skills
- Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital offer a 15-week program.
- Pharmacy technician trainees are paid an hourly wage during training.
