Reaching Out to Our Inner Cities
by Timothy Flanigan, MD, director of the Samuel and
Esther Chester Immunology Center at The Miriam Hospital
I am very pleased to announce that the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
has selected me for an award in the Community Health Leadership Program.
This is a wonderful program in which they select ten individuals around
the country each year for leadership in the area of health in our
communities. Happily, this award also comes with $95,000 which can be
spent over three years for the programs of our choice.
I was granted this award primarily due to our work at the Immunology
Center linking comprehensive care for HIV infected men and women who are
leaving prison and for our work with RISE and STARKIDS which support the
children of incarcerated mothers in inner-city small, effective non-public
schools with the help of a sponsor.
This is a wonderful opportunity for us to highlight our work at the
Immunology Center with HIV+ persons. One of the goals of this program is
to allow dissemination of information in our community about model
programs that address acute health needs. The Immunology Center is a model
program in which we are able to provide comprehensive care for HIV
infected men and women irrespective of insurance or ability to pay.
