Reducing Youthful Dangerous Decisions (RYDD) is an educational program designed  to reduce high-risk behaviors related to driving, alcohol and marijuana among our youth. The program started in 2001 and is a collaborative effort between the Injury Prevention Center at Rhode Island Hospital and the Rhode Island judicial system.

The program targets youth between the ages of 15 and 20 years old. The program consists of 20 hours and is completed within a three-week time period. There is a fee for this program.

There are four components to the RYDD program:

    • Program Scheduling and Survey Completion
This is a 45 minute meeting during which participants receive their RYDD program schedule, learn about the requirements for their volunteer obligation and complete a survey. If the participant is under the age of 18, he or she must attend this meeting with a parent or guardian.
    • Group Workshops
Participants are expected to attend all three workshops. Each workshop is three hours in length and includes video presentations and discussions. Upon program completion, all RYDD participants are required to write a 500 word reflection essay.
    • Volunteering in the Community
Community service will involve seven hours and must be completed by the final workshop. Individuals will be assigned to participating local community agencies. Volunteer hours will be verified by the RYDD staff.
    • Observing within the Rhode Island Hospital Emergency Department
Along with a mentor, participants in small groups will spend three hours on an assigned evening shift, which provides an opportunity to view the negative consequences of high risk behaviors.
