Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is a specialized treatment for those patients suffering from intractable depression, bipolar disorder or schizo-affective disorder. Patients with other conditions, particularly those with a combination of psychiatric medical and neurological symptoms, may also be appropriate candidates for ECT.
ECT includes both inpatient and outpatient components. Outpatient ECT is appropriate for patients receiving maintenance ECT, as well as those in the course of their initial treatment series who no longer require hospitalization. Several psychiatrists within the department of psychiatry can provide this treatment.
