  • Therapeutic Activities

  • The geriatric psychiatry inpatient unit offers the following therapeutic activities:

    Morning Stretching - This daily activity focuses on exercising and stretching the body in concert with the breath, enhancing the mind and body connection. The recreational therapist or mental health worker facilitates.

    A.M. Check-In Group - Daily at 10:15 a.m., this activity reviews community expectations and personal, daily goal setting.

    Recreation Group - Weekdays at 11:15 a.m. Simple and fun, this activity is used to demonstrate an ability to complete tasks and function well with others.

    Devotion/Meditation - Wednesdays at 11:15 a.m. as requested by patients. This is led by the hospital's chaplain in an effort to provide a spiritual resource to all interested patients.

    Group Therapy - Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 2:15 p.m., and Tuesdays at 1:15 p.m. A social worker and/or psychology intern facilitates. Patient determines attendance and treatment needs.

    Expressive Therapy Groups - Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 1:15 p.m., and Tuesdays and Fridays at 2:15 p.m. Groups focus on utilizing creative methods to enhance coping skills and increase socialization. Weekends offer open art studio, cooking, movies and other recreational activities.

    Wrap Up Group / Focus Group - Daily at 8:15 p.m. This is facilitated by a mental health worker and/or registered nurse. Assessment of goals, skills training, education.

    Individual Therapeutic Activities - All patients are encouraged to seek out staff for activities to be completed during free time.

    Attendance to all groups is strongly encouraged as an integral part of the treatment plan.
