Post-Holiday Stress?

Stress“It’s the most wonderful time of the year” sings Andy Williams. But, we all know that even after the presents are opened and the decorations taken down, post-holiday stress can linger.

“With the shopping malls and the media promoting the holidays as early as late summer, anxieties form for several months,” says Jaime Longval, a certified strength and conditioning specialist at The Miriam Hospital’s Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine. “As a result, stress can build up without us even realizing it, creating physical and mental stiffness that doesn’t magically disappear on December 26.”

Stretching can be an effective strategy to relieve stress as it lengthens the muscles to relieve tension. Stretching is also convenient and cost-effective, as it can be done almost anywhere and doesn’t require any special equipment. This is an added bonus as the holiday bills start trickling in.
