Managing Depression with Psychotherapy
A Beneficial Partnership: Psychotherapy and Medication
Either psychotherapy or medication alone can be highly effective in treating depression, but in many cases patients benefit from a combination of both. For example, while psychotherapy can provide multiple coping tools, it offers little help for depression on the biochemical level. On the other hand, not everyone responds to medication.
Anthony says, “Some studies have shown that with cases of severe depression, medication proves more effective, while with mild or moderate cases psychotherapy and specifically CBT can be more effective.”
To help ensure the best treatment plan, each patient should undergo a complete physical and diagnostic evaluation in which the severity of depression, history of responsiveness to treatments and patient preference should be considered. Patients should never discontinue use of medication without consulting their physicians.
