Treatment for anorexia:
Treatment of anorexia is difficult, because people with anorexia
believe there is nothing wrong with them. At this time no treatment
program for anorexia is completely effective; however eating disorders are
most successfully treated when diagnosed early. People with anorexia can
reverse most of the complications associated with the disease by gaining
weight. Some anorexics can be treated as outpatients, but some may need
hospitalization to stabilize their dangerously low weight.
A variety of approaches are used to treat people with anorexia.
-
Psychotherapy helps anorexics deal with underlying emotional issues
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy helps to change abnormal thoughts and
behaviors
- Group or family therapy is advised so people can share their
experiences with others
- Physicians are needed to prescribe antidepressant
medications that are useful in treating anorexia.
- Nutritionists
advise patients about proper diet and normal eating regimens.
