Eating Disorders and Men?
Though eating disorders are most often associated with young women, the
National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders
estimates that nearly one million American men suffer. The actual number
of men may be much greater. Because many doctors don't look for eating
disorders in males and because men are reluctant to seek help, numerous
cases may go undiagnosed.
The symptoms of an eating disorder are very similar in men and
women. Symptoms include:
- Preoccupation with food
- Excessive dieting or compulsive overeating
- Obsession with one's body size or shape
- Dissatisfaction with one's body
- Preoccupation with exercise or weight lifting
- Excessive weight changes, either up or down
Unlike women with eating disorders who often say they feel fat
even when they are of normal weight, men who develop eating disorders
typically have a history of being overweight. However, it's still not
clear what factors put a man at risk.
