Nephrology
The Fellowship Program
Like all areas of medicine, nephrology encompasses a broad and
growing field of knowledge. On the clinical level it is grounded
in traditional bedside medicine, and interfaces with the other branches
of internal medicine from allergy to rheumatology. On the basic
science level it receives advanced technical contributions from
the fields of immunology, genetics, cell and molecular biology.
Thus, nephrologists need a solid foundation in all these areas,
and also the skills to stay abreast of new developments as we move
into the next century.
The division of nephrology at Lifespan and Brown Medical School
offers a fellowship program at Rhode Island and Miriam hospitals
that is designed to provide this training.
- The spectrum of activities in clinical nephrology extends from
performance of renal biopsies to the analysis of complex acid-base
problems.
- The cornerstone of the program is the wide exposure to primary
and secondary renal diseases, hypertension and electrolyte problems
on our busy inpatient consultation service.
- In addition, there are rotations through chronic dialysis, transplant
and pediatric nephrology services.
- Outpatient training consists of consultations and longitudinal
ambulatory care in our clinic.
In all of these areas one-on-one teaching is provided by
faculty members experienced in clinical nephrology and committed
to the education of fellows, residents and medical students. This
clinical training is complemented by a didactic program designed
to review clinically relevant topics in nephrology, teach literature
analysis and expose trainees to new areas of investigation.
