  • Breastfeeding Basics

Mary Lovegreen, clinical nurse in the Noreen Stonor Drexel Birthing Center at Newport Hospital, highlights the numerous benefits of breastfeeding for mother and baby.

The decision to breastfeed your baby requires careful consideration. You'll want to learn as much as you can about breastfeeding before you choose if it's right for you and your baby. You may want to talk with your health care provider and a lactation consultant, who can both provide additional information and answer your questions about breastfeeding. Breastfeeding offers benefits to both baby and mother:

    For baby, breast milk:

    • Is easily digested
    • Offers complete, balanced nutrition
    • Contains antibodies that help protect against infection

    For mother, breastfeeding:

    • Is cost effective
    • Helps the uterus return to its pre-pregnancy size
