Avoid an Attack by a Killer Tomato
What about those side dishes? "Fruits and vegetables deserve
the same consideration before you put them on your plate," says nutritionist Phyllis Freedman. "They aren't as
likely to be bacteria-prone, but it pays to make sure your produce is
clean."
Here's some advice:
- Rinse produce in cool water just before preparing a meal. Avoid soap
which leaves a residue.
- To retain freshness, store in airtight plastic containers instead of
metal bowls.
- Scrub root vegetables, like potatoes, to remove dirt.
- Washing produce before slicing it prevents the knife from dragging
bacteria from the surface to the inside.
