A Multidisciplinary, Team-Based Approach
Collectively, gastrointestinal cancers are among the most
common form of malignancies suffered today, affecting nearly
a quarter of a million Americans each year. To address this,
the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Rhode Island Hospital,
The Miriam Hospital and Newport Hospital has brought together
nationally recognized leaders in the treatment and research
of gastrointestinal cancers.
The center's team-based approach provides state-of-the-art
care for patients who have or are at risk for cancers of
the upper gastrointestinal tract, such as pancreatic cancer,
cancer of the esophagus, and tumors involving the liver.
The evaluation, management and follow-up of patients with
these diseases can be complex and usually require multiple
disciplines throughout all phases of a patient's illness.
Individually, each of the three hospitals has a long history
of providing innovative cancer care to thousands of patients
in New England and throughout the United States. Together,
they offer a unique service that combines their strengths
to offer referring physicians and their patients convenient
access to a comprehensive range of services and a multidisciplinary
team of leading gastrointestinal cancer specialists.
