Rhode Island Hospital radiation oncologist-in-chief David
Wazer, MD, is named in the Ladies' Home Journal
as one of America's leading physicians and in Redbook,
Good Housekeeping and Boston Magazine as one
of the top 100 radiation oncologists in the country. |
We have achieved a reputation for innovative treatments, and
our staff includes some of the world's most renowned physicians,
scientists and technologists. Our combination of outstanding staff,
sophisticated technology, productive research and a multidisciplinary
approach has led to superior patient care and excellent outcomes.
We offer many treatments that are not available elsewhere in the
state or the region.
- Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is the
most dramatic breakthrough in cancer treatment in recent years.
IMRT delivers extremely effective, highly focused radiation
to tumors while sparing the surrounding tissue.
- Radiosurgery is a noninvasive procedure to treat malignant
and benign brain tumors. It delivers high-dose radiation using
three-dimensional computer imaging and highly focused beams.
Radiosurgery can be used on an outpatient basis.
- Brachytherapy, an internal radiation therapy delivered
by radioactive implant, is used at virtually all body sites,
including the gynecologic and gastrointestinal tracts, head
and neck regions, breast, eye, lung and prostate. It is very
effective against complex tumors and may be combined with other
forms of therapy.
- Intraoperative radiation therapy is a type of implant
radiation that delivers a large dose of radiation to a tumor
and surrounding tissue during surgery. Surgeons and radiation
oncologists work together to remove the tumor and place radioactive
sources to irradiate the local area and kill remaining cancer
cells.
- High-dose remote afterloading brachytherapy is an outpatient
implant therapy. Each treatment takes a few minutes while the
radioactive source is in place, and the source is removed between
treatments.
We have developed significant expertise in advanced computer
applications for radiation therapy, the results of which are a
marked increase in the rate of cure we achieve and a decrease
in patients' side effects. Our patients come to us from around
the nation as well as from many other countries because we offer
the most current treatments available, the most experienced medical
teams and the most dedicated care for patients with cancer.
