 Microbiology
The division of microbiology offers microbiological consultative
and clinical testing services to aid in the diagnosis of infectious
diseases. Staffed by a board-certified pathologist, the division
provides the only microbiology laboratory in the state of Rhode
Island offering testing in all of the infectious disease diagnostic
areas.
The division offers:
- Pre-ordering assistance for test selection.
- Review of specimen results, correlation and interpretation.
- STAT smear interpretation.
- Routine bacterial culture and specialized techniques for isolation
of unique pathogens.
- Diagnostics which include STAT testing for specific virus
groups, direct DFA testing for HSV and VZV from vesicles, and
specialized susceptibility testing.
- Molecular techniques for GC and chlamydia testing, quantitative
plasma viral loads for HIV and HCV, HPV and group A streptococcus.
- Feedback for referring physicians, including autofax reporting
and telephone notification of significant results.
