Karen Swartz, CCLS, came to Hasbro Children's Hospital in June of 1998 after receiving her master's degree in child life and family-centered care from Wheelock College in Boston. She is a certified child life specialist and a member of the Child Life Council. Her clinical interests include modeling developmentally appropriate play for children and families, procedural education and support.
As a member of the pediatric GI team, Swartz works in the outpatient clinic meeting new and returning patients and families. Her role in clinic is to assist families in maintaining normalcy through their visit , which is done through educating them about procedure and preparation. She supports families through medical procedures and provides therapeutic play opportunities. She also works with the clinic psychiatrists to help prepare patients for medical procedures, including anything from blood work to endoscopy.
Recognizing the importance of social interaction with peers, Swartz co-leads the IBD patient support group, which provides a safe environment for kids to explore their feelings about their diagnosis of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
